Carlito's Way

Carlito walks out of prison sure the old life is over, then treats every person still attached to it as an exception. The plan with Gail gets clearer while the room to reach it keeps shrinking. He finally refuses Kleinfeld, survives the chase to Grand Central and gets to the train. Benny Blanco shoots him there, with Gail a few steps away.

Change starts before escape is possible

Carlito means it. He comes out of prison genuinely finished with the old life, and that is not an act. The problem is that nobody around him has changed with him, and they all still know which buttons work. A man can repent long before he learns how to defend it. Carlito thinks wanting out is the same as being out.

Exceptions rebuild what repentance rejects

Nobody decides to go back. They make exceptions. Help the cousin, once. Run the club, only until the money is there. Do the lawyer one favour, because of history. Each one can be defended on its own, and that is exactly what makes them work. Carlito keeps trying to leave through doors he will not close.

Gratitude can become another kind of prison

Kleinfeld got Carlito out of prison, so Carlito never decides when that debt is paid. Kleinfeld decides, and he never says it is. Carlito knows the boat trip is wrong before he gets on it. He goes anyway, because saying no to the man who freed you feels like betrayal. Prison let him out. Kleinfeld still has a key.

Mercy does not purchase protection

Sparing Benny Blanco is the choice that looks stupidest once you know the ending. That is why it counts. Carlito lets him live because killing him would mean he is still the old Carlito, and Benny kills him for it. Doing the right thing did not protect him. It was still the right thing.

De Palma makes the last run through Grand Central feel physical. He opens a path through the crowd, the stairs, the platform, just long enough for escape to look possible, and then closes it.

Reputation survives after desire dies

Carlito is tired of being Carlito Brigante. Everyone else is still talking to the legend. Benny wants respect from him for exactly the reason Carlito no longer wants it himself. You cannot quit a reputation on your own, not while other people are still making money off it.

Ordinary life becomes the dangerous dream

The Bahamas. Gail. A kid. A car rental place. For a gangster that dream is almost embarrassingly small, and that is the point. He wants to be boring. It turns out the old life is harder to get out of than the prison was.
